THC-Free CBD For Post-Injection Relief—MDFarma Shares Fads v Facts

In this day and age, “cannabis” is a buzz word that can be found on the labels of oils, creams, cosmetics, and even tea! It seems as though the word itself has become an umbrella term referring to “weed”, “pot”, or “Mary Jane”. Founders of MDFarma’s Clinical THC-Free CBD line, Reggie Gatewood and Chad Collins, join us for Episode 11 of ARTV to dispel the common myths about CBD and why not every CBD product is created equal.

What is the difference between Marijuana v. Hemp v. Cannabis?

Generally speaking, both marijuana and hemp belong to a genus of flowering plants called Cannabis. Cannabis is comes in pure and hybrid varieties of these three species: C. sativa, C. india, and C. ruderalis. Each variety is grown in different regions of the world and has its own unique structure. What classifies the Cannabis plant as either hemp or marijuana is due to their distinct uses, chemical composition, and cultivation methods. Because of this, US law defines and regulates both differently.

According to the Congressional Research Service, marijuana is a psychoactive drug derived from the flower part of the the Cannabis plant and contains more that 0.3% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) used for recreational and medicinal purposes. Hemp, in contrast, contains less than 0.3% THC and uses the fiber, seed, and/or flowering parts of the Cannabis plant when formulating food items, personal care products, textiles and fabrics, dietary supplements and therapeutic products, and other manufactured and industrial products.

What is the difference between THC and CBD?

Interestingly, both THC and cannabidiol (nicknamed CBD for short) are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in the Cannabis plants. Reggie refers to them as “cousins,” as they have very different effects. In essence, the THC is responsible for giving you a “high” and the CBD is not.

The stigma of CBD can be traced to a moment in time when all cannabis varieties, including hemp, were characterized under the Controlled Substance Act (CSA) as a Schedule 1 narcotic. In 2018, after the FDA approval of CBD drug Epidiolex, used to treat two forms of epileptic seizures, the DEA recategorized CBD products with less than 0.1% THC as Schedule V.

Furthermore, the DEA defines Schedule V drugs, substances, and chemicals as having lower potential for abuse and dependence. Many antidiarrheal, analgesic, and antitussive drugs fit within this category.

By removing THC, MDFarma is able to incorporate all of the therapeutic benefits from CBD into its formulations while eliminating the psychotropic side effects produced by THC.

How does THC-Free CBD help treat inflammation, bruising, and other post-injection injuries?

Each person has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that comprises of endocannabinoids and their receptors (CB1 and CB2) which work together to maintain the body’s homeostasis. Areas affected by these receptors are:

  1. Inflammation (CB1 and CB2)
  2. Stress response (CB1)
  3. Blood Pressure (CB1)
  4. Mood (CB1)
  5. Memory (CB1)
  6. Immune System (CB2)
  7. Bone and Skin Health (CB2)
  8. Cardiovascular System (CB2)
  9. Liver and Kidney Function (CB2)

The MDFarma website offers in-depth education about ECS and explains how clinical grade broad spectrum CBD products help inhibit the breakdown of your body’s endocannabinoids. Chad explains that skin contains both receptors, making topical formulations a viable way to target the ECS directly and, therefore, engaging the inflammatory cascade and other areas of concerns exasperated by an inflammatory response.
